Sedation Dentistry

Some dental procedures are more comfortable for your child if sedation treatments are used. The two most common forms of sedation treatment are oral sedation and nitrous sedation. Our staff are trained in both forms, so they can use the method that will be most comfortable and beneficial for your child.

Nitrous Sedation

Nitrous oxide (laughing gas) is a sedation treatment that is introduced to your child’s mouth through the nose. A small mask is placed over their nose, which delivers the laughing gas. The gas is mixed with oxygen so that it is maintained at a safe level for your child.

Nitrous oxide helps your child stay relaxed and comfortable during what could be an uncomfortable procedure. While laughing gas isn’t meant to put your child to sleep, it helps keep them calm and comfortable. Your child will even be able to respond to requests and answer questions while laughing gas is in their system. They may feel a tingling in their nose, mouth, or arms, but this is normal and wears off shortly after the mask is removed.

Talk to Dr. Luchini about whether or not nitrous sedation will be best for your child.

Oral Sedation

Oral sedation is a method of sedation where your child ingests a pill with a small dosage of anesthetic. The dosage can be altered, depending on your child, from minimal to moderate. The anesthetic will make your child groggy and drowsy so they won’t feel the anxiety associated with a procedure. It is sometimes strong enough to make your child fall asleep, but they can be awakened with a gentle nudge.

Oral sedation is one of the most common forms of dental sedation. It is simple to administer and the effects are not long-lasting. Ask Dr. Luchini if oral sedation is best for your child.
